Snow Falling on Cedars is a novel by David Guterson (1994). One of the main characters is Ishmael Chambers, a reporter for the local paper. The novel deals with prejudice in post WW2 America towards Japanese Americans. Letters feature within the book with Ishmael’s childhood love breaking up with him via a 'Dear John' letter.
Cathedral is a short story by Raymond Carver (1984). The story is written in the first person narrative and we are never told the narrator's name. I's wife communicates with a past friend an employer, a blind man, via recorded tape messages.
