Animal's People by Indra Sinha was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2007 and winner of the Commonwealth Writers' Prize 2008.

 

The novel's main character is a 19-year-old orphaned boy whom everyone calls Animal because he was left crippled after the gas leak in the nearby chemical factory in Khaufpur, known to us as Bhopal - one of the world's worst industrial disasters. Here Animal gives himself the name Vijay meaning victory, abbreviated to a cooler version of VJ. Lord Voldemort is a villain who needs little introduction, he is known worldwide as the antagonist of Harry Potter.
